Center for East Asian Studies

The Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS) sponsors research, lectures, and seminars on subjects relating to East Asia. Currently, CEAS is examining cross-border human flows in Northeast Asia, including China, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, and Russia; economic and environmental cooperation in the region; the prospects for Northeast Asia's regionalism; and the U.S.-Japan security alliance.

Projects include research, conferences, and curriculum material development. In these projects CEAS collaborates with researchers and research institutions in China, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, Russia, and the U.S.

CEAS hosts scholars, diplomats, government officials, and journalists to lecture on a wide range of East Asian topics. Past guest lecturers have included a Japanese ambassador to the United States, a South Korean consul general in San Francisco, Asahi Shimbun Editorial Board Chair, and professors/researchers from Moscow State University, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, and the University of Queensland.

CEAS also hosts visiting fellows who conduct research on topics of interest to the Center. Past visiting fellows include professors/researchers from the Economic Research Institute (Khabarovsk), Economic Research Institute for Northeast Asia (Niigata), Renmin University of China (Beijing), Institute of History, Archaeology, and Ethnology of the Far Eastern Peoples (Vladivostok), and the University of Maryland.

CEAS offers Monterey Institute students tuition scholarships in Northeast Asian Studies, summer internships in Northeast Asian countries, and research opportunities at the Center. Interns have been placed with the Economic Research Institute (Khabarovsk), Economic Research Institute for Northeast Asia (Niigata), Institute of History, Archaeology, and Ethnology of the Far Eastern Peoples (Vladivostok), Hokkaido University's Slavic Research Center (Sapporo), and Harbin Academy of Social Sciences (Harbin).

In 2006, in addition to these institutions, interns will be placed with the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, the Shanghai Institute of International Studies, International Crisis Group (Seoul), Korea Institute of National Unification (Seoul), and Mongolian Development Research Center (Ulaan Baatar).

The Center also maintains a website dedicated to the exchange of information on Northeast Asian Studies Curriculum Clearinghouse Initiative and study opportunities in the U.S. and elsewhere.
