Asian Studies

Program Description | Sample Curriculum | Portfolio Requirement


The specialization in Asian studies requires 20 credit hours as shown below. Grade of B or better is required in each course. In addition, students are encouraged to gain professional development experience in Asia or with an organization dealing with Asia. The specialization is to be designed by the student in conjunction with her/his advisor.

Required:

  • IP 528 Asia and the World

One of the following:

  • IP 510 Security and Arms Control in Northeast Asia
  • IP 550 Japan in the World
  • IP 572 Post Soviet Central Asia and Russia:
    Politics and Society
  • IP 579 The China Factor (4 credits)

Two seminars on an Asian country, Russia, or a subregion of Asia:

  • IP 603 Seminar: Asia’s Development Challenges in the 21st Century
  • IP 606 Seminar: Chinese Nonproliferation and Security Policy
  • IP 641 Seminar: Nonproliferation in the NIS
  • IP 649 Seminar: Regionalism in Northeast Asia
  • IP 655 Seminar: Conflict & Cooperation in South Asia
  • IP 668 Seminar: Terrorism in South Asia
  • IP 683 Seminar: South Asia and Weapons of Mass Destruction
  • IP 689 Seminar: Islam and Politics in Russia and Central Asia

In addition, students may take a course without country/region designation but do a major research paper on a country/region of Asia and Russia, with prior approval of the instructor.

One language course:

  • One 400 or higher level course in Chinese, Japanese or Russian at MIIS (4 units): A content course may substitute. The 4 units of language under this specialization may be part of or in addition to the 12 units of language credit required by MIIS.
  • If your target language is Japanese, you may use Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) Level 2 as an alternative to meet this requirement.

Professional development: 

Internship, research assistantship, or some other form of experiential learning opportunity: to develop language & analytical skills, as well as acquisition of advanced knowledge of an international policy issue of direct relevance to Asia and Siberia/Pacific Russia -- e.g., political relations, national security, regional security, arms control, non-traditional security, population and migration, economic development, free trade agreements, energy and resource development, environmental policy, non-profit management, program evaluation, financial analysis, gender mainstreaming, mediation & conflict resolution. There are numerous professional experiences available at local, national and international organizations in the public, private and non-profit sectors. Note: students do not receive academic credit for professional experiences.
