Career Paths - International Environmental Policy

It's All about You

Developing your career should be a primary focus if you are considering a degree from the Monterey Institute. From the time you arrive on campus, the faculty and staff work with students to begin thinking about life after graduate school. A primary advantage of GSIPS is the one-on-one mentoring that students receive from the time they arrive for Orientation Week through graduation and beyond.

How to Land Your Dream Job

If you could work for any organization in the world, which would it be? If you could live and work in any country on the planet, where would it be? Would you like to be based in your home country and travel part-time overseas? These are just a few of the questions we encourage students to think about.

Individual Attention

This is not a research dominated university. Instead, the Monterey Institute is a professional graduate school, where the emphasis lies with practice and skills. Think of it like dental or medical school. It also differs from big research universities in that we have no Ph.D. students who absorb most of the professors' available time and energy. Nor do we have undergraduate students. We only have master's degree students. This allows the professors to focus squarely on people like you, working collaboratively to identify where you want to go and how we can help you get there. The classes are small; the level of interaction with professors is high.

Defining Your Career Interests

Students spend the first semester exploring the various international environmental career paths. They might do an assignment on marine conservation. Then they do a paper on global energy policy. Next they do a project on the integration of business and the environment. And so on. Eventually, they become passionate about a specific topic or two. The topic, let's say trade & the environment, becomes their specialty area.

Students Take the Lead

The responsibility is yours to come meet with the faculty and career staff to brainstorm career ideas and cultivate opportunities. We will gladly spend as much time discussing your career plans as you like, but you need to initiate the conversations. It's all about you!
