 At a professional school, courses need to reflect a mix of both knowledge acquisition and professional skills development. For students in the MAIPS degree, there is a level of flexibility and focus that suits every interest, background, experience level and passion.
This sample of courses taught in the past illustrate the range of topics covered at GSIPS:
- Introductory courses focus on the mastery of fundamental knowledge and skills.
- Intermediate level courses add professional depth.
- Advanced courses require students to apply what they have learned to real-world situations. Typically, courses meet twice a week for two hours.
- Seminars meet only once a week and involve independent research projects.
- Weekend workshops meet Friday evening, and all day Saturday and Sunday for one weekend, and provide students with an "intro approach" to a critical policy issue or skill. The majority of weekend workshops are taught by visiting practitioners; many offer a "hands-on" approach, incorporating team projects, group presentations and other activities.
Students complete the required core courses, a set number of courses in their specialization, and then round out their educational experience in their MAIPS degree with a number of elective course options. Electives are selected from courses offered in GSIPS, and with permission, from courses in the Fisher Graduate School of International Business. Required and elective courses in advanced language studies are offered by the Language Studies faculty of the Graduate School of Language and Educational Linguistics.
Students may also transfer in a limited number of credits from other internationally focused, graduate-level programs. An excellent example of this option is the Naval Postgraduate School agreement with GSIPS to offer a select number of courses to GSIPS students each semester.
