Our graduates enter an international professional world that is shaped by the dynamics of economic interactions – among individuals, firms, states and others. Economic decisions affect our environment, can contribute to peace and stability or provoke unrest and conflict, and can greatly influence the quality of life for rich and poor, nationally and globally. Much of what goes on in the world today is shaped by economic decision-making. GSIPS remains strongly committed to ensuring that every student graduating from our degree programs has a useful grasp of the fundamentals of international economics, and ideally, exposure to other sub-fields within economics most closely associated with students’ specialization.
Proficiency in microeconomics and macroeconomics is required prior to enrollment in IP 520 because it is an intermediate level economics course. Most undergraduate courses in microeconomics and macroeconomics or a solid Principles of Economics course are adequate for this purpose.
The economics prerequisite requirement can be met in one of several ways:
- provide transcripts showing a B or better in both micro and macro economics in the last 3 years
-OR-
- pass a placement exam offered during New Student Orientation
-OR-
- successfully pass the intensive economics prep course described below:
The Monterey Institute occasionally offers a two week course during the summer and winter break. Students can register for the Macro or Micro sections separately or take both sections to complete the requirement. Successfully passing this course is sufficient for meeting the prerequisite. Please note that this course is offered on an ad hoc basis depending on demand, and may not be offered every summer or winter break.
