GSIPS Course Descriptions

We offer a wide range of policy-based courses each semester, recognizing international trends, concerns and current events. Being able to quickly adapt to developing issues within the context of the courses is one of our greatest strengths.

In addition to introductory and required courses, students are able to select from a generous list of courses reflective of their specific interests, regional focus, and more.

Four Categories of Courses:

  • Introductory & Intermediate (500-level): Introductory courses focus on the mastery of fundamental knowledge and skills. Intermediate level courses add professional depth.
  • Advanced Level & Seminars (600-level): Advanced courses require students to apply what they have learned to real-world situations and student involvement including: team exercises, simulations, oral presentations (individual and group), and extensive research projects.
  • Workshops: Held over a weekend, workshops often introduce specialized skills and areas of knowledge related to specific career fields.
  • Directed Study: Under the guidance of a faculty advisor, students can develop their own course of study reflective of their research interests and usually based at a more advanced level from a previous class. This is an intensive, one-on-one environment, wherein the student produces a significant paper. Directed study is available on a case-by-case basis, pending faculty approval.
Typically, courses meet twice a week for two hours; seminars usually meet once a week and involve independent research projects.

Unique Study Opportunities

By special agreement with the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), California State University of Monterey Bay (CSUMB), and others, GSIPS students can enroll in select courses at these institutions. Information is available at the GSIPS Dean's Office.

Course Catalog

Each GSIPS degree is comprised of required core courses and electives, as described in the course catalog for the Graduate School for International Policy Studies. Electives are selected from courses offered in GSIPS, and with permission, from courses in the Fisher Graduate School of International Business. Required and elective courses in advanced language studies are offered by the Language Studies faculty of the Graduate School of Language and Educational Linguistics.

Although not all of the courses described in our course catalog are offered each semester, we list descriptions of courses offered at different times over the past three years.
