"My main objectives while at the UN [are] to learn about the organization, become involved as much as possible...So far so good...Learning wise - this is an incredible opportunity."

"I expect the opportunity to work with two or three outside consultants to whom my section has contracted some research and analysis. That will be an opportunity to present myself to these consulting firms as a valuable resource. Together with a strong recommendation from my section chief, I can anticipate some advantage over other applicants should I decide to apply to one of these consultancies."
~ Carlos Griffin, MAITP
Fellow: UN Conference on Trade & Development (UNCTAD), Geneva, Switzerland |

"One of the biggest assets I have found since I have been here is the affiliation with the Monterey Institute, specifically CNS [Center for Nonproliferation Studies]. I find myself often answering as many questions as asked, specifically in regard to terrorism. I participated in a CW [Chemical Weapons] training course in Spiez, Switzerland. The course was an advanced international course with participants from 14 different countries with extensive backgrounds in the CW field."
~ Ryan Keenan, MAIPS
Fellow: Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), The Hague, Netherlands |

"The further I move along with IPSS, the more defined my perception of what I wish my future job to be becomes. I really want to be working in the field on projects related to humanitarian assistance. With the ICRC delegate position as my top choice..."

"I have been making quite a few contacts through my internship. I am working with consultants, partner organizations, and other units within UNHCR on an Age, Gender and Diversity Mainstreaming project that is being rolled-out across Southern Africa. In the next few months, I will be traveling within South Africa and Mozambique to work on my research and to assist with a participatory assessment with children on their perceptions and experiences of violence in a refugee camp. As part of my research project I will be assessing the prevention and response to sexual and gender-based violence in the camp in Mozambique. I imagine that during my upcoming field missions I will be making many more professional contacts."
~ Monika Szewczyk, MAIPS
Fellow: UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Pretoria, South Africa |

I have been meeting with experts for my research project this month. This has been a great opportunity to meet with people who are working in this field and to learn more about some of the different organizations in the area. Being a student at the Monterey Institute has been really helpful not only in meeting with former students for my research, but as a conversation starter. Every conference and luncheon I attend I meet people familiar with the Institute and different professors."
