IPSS is a rigorous and rich learning experience. In addition to the professional component, students engage in extensive pre-departure preparation, an independent research project, and a capstone seminar at the end of the six month program. IPSS is a 12-credit course. In order to receive credit, participants must complete all aspects of the academic requirements.

Preparatory Work

  • Research on the assigned organization and relevant policy issues
  • Development of Terms of Reference (TOR) for a junior staff position with the organization, in consultation with the IPSS Administration
  • Development of a research proposal, in collaboration with a GSIPS faculty mentor and the supervisor at the assigned organization

Pre-Departure Workshops

The workshops are designed to prepare participating students to work as professionals at assigned organizations. Topics covered include: the role of organizations, organizational theory, organizational partnering, gender mainstreaming, conflict resolution, and cross-cultural communication. The workshop also offers opportunities for students to gain valuable skills in negotiations and diplomacy, and teambuilding.

Capstone Seminar

  • All IPSS students return to the Monterey Institute upon completion of their assignments for a two-week capstone seminar in which students compile a comprehensive report to be presented to Monterey Institute faculty, staff and students. The capstone seminar for IPSS 2008 fellows will be held August 14-21, 2008.
