Pavel Tishikov, MBA/MAIPS, Certificate in Nonproliferation Studies, brought a practitioner from the Assistance and Protection Branch of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in the Hague, Netherlands to facilitate a three-day workshop on delivering and coordinating responses to chemical weapons’ attacks.
Tommi Drum, MAIPS, worked in Nepal on issues of security and the environment. His presentation, entitled, "Environmental Conflict in Nepal: The Isolated People of Madi, Chitwan," was presented to the Monterey Institute in the Fall of 2007.
Elizabeth Henshaw, MAIEP, Eva Haas, MAIEP, and Irina Comardicea, MAIEP, attended the Alliance for Conflict Transformation (ACT) Summer Institute on Peacebuilding and Conflict Resolution in La Paz and Santa Cruz Bolivia. Based on what they learned in this program, the three students created a resource website for the Monterey Institute community.
Megan Kennedy, MPA, spent the summer with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Development Assistance Committee in Paris, France. Her research and project work was presented as part of a GSIPS Career Development workshop to the Monterey Institute community during the Spring of 2008.
Elizabeth Brogard, MPA, and the rest of the Innova group, which began as a project in Dr. Beryl Levinger’s Advanced Nonprofit Management class, provided consulting services to the Salinas Youth Collaborative. Innova provided this umbrella group of governmental and nongovernmental groups with capacity building, strategic planning and innovation assistance.
Jeannette Allan, MAIPS, Specialization in International Negotiation/Conflict Resolution, attended a conflict resolution training and conference in Amman, Jordan, hosted by Global Majority, the United Nations University and the Palestine-Israel Journal. In the fall, Jeannette took on the role of President of the campus Conflict Resolution Association and planned several events for the Monterey Institute community.
Justin Locke, MPA was in Samoa for the summer, evaluating and updating the disaster management plan for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) – Samoa office through a combination of research and field work. In the Fall of 2007, he gave a brief presentation on obtaining an internship with the United Nations. Additionally, in the Spring of 2008, he served as the teaching assistant for a course in humanitarian assistance, directly applying his hands-on experience from the previous summer.
