William "Bill" Godnick, MAIPS 1997 International Alert, (London-based), Senior Policy Adviser for Latin America
"My time at the Monterey Institute allowed me to polish my professional Spanish-language skills in classes such as Latin American Economics, EU Issues and Doing Business in Latin America. It also broadened my original career interests from a pure development focus to one in the emerging field of security and development. Had I not had the opportunity to study under and work with Professor Laurance, my career would certainly have developed in a different and possibly less interesting direction."
Upon graduation from the MAIPS degree program, I spent two years working for Professor Ed Laurance's Program on Security and Development and Project Prep Com (a virtual effort to organize a global network of NGOs that eventually became the International Action Network on Small Arms). Prior to undertaking my studies at GSIPS, I was a Peace Corps volunteer working on micro-entreprise development in Honduras, Central America.
In 2000, I left Monterey to pursue a distance Ph.D. in International Relations and Security Studies at the University of Bradford (UK), while also working as a consultant on issues of security and development with clients such as the United Nations Development Program Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery, German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) Bonn International Center for Conversion, Viva Rio (Brazil) and the Argentine Ministry of Justice and Security. These experiences led to my employment as a consultant to International Alert in 2002.
In this position, I spend an equal amount of time on research, program development and convening multi-stakeholder fora related to issues of conflict-sensitive business practice, gender and security and small arms non-proliferation, primarily in the Andean region of Latin America.
